SUNDAY NEWS: Eating your way through the North Tonawanda City Market

Vada pav are fried potato patties, dressed with lively sauces, at Buffalo’s Vada Pav at the North Tonawanda City Market

Buffalo eaters have the opportunity to sample another of the world’s greatest snacks with the efforts of Buffalo’s Vada Pav.

Ambika Swami started at the Williamsville Farmers Market two years ago. This season, Saturdays will bring her to the North Tonawanda City Market, joining its lineup of local food operations offering marketgoers ready-to-eat snacks.

Vada pav are fried potato patties, on a roll, but dressed up with green mint chutney, tangy brown tamarind chutney, and other toppings. Think of a tasty deep-fried burger, but make it vegan.

Here’s some of the other food options at the North Tonawanda City Market.

Chapli kabob, Clay Handi

REVIEW: Fifteen years ago, when a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Kenmore closed, there were still seven KFC outlets in Buffalo. What replaced it was something singular: Buffalo’s only Pakistani restaurant. Clay Handi opened Kenmore’s eyes to the thrill of chapli kababs, seekh kebabs, haleem, and carrot halwa. Now that the restaurant has reopened after a complete reconstruction, it’s time to consider what the cooks at 3034 Delaware Avenue have contributed to the neighborhood. (For patrons, later this week.)

Fresh rhubarb from Lily Acres Farm at the North Tonawanda City Market

ASK THE CRITIC

Q: The other day, I was wondering if rhubarb season is here yet, or if there are any rhubarb treats you would recommend.

A: Indeed. On Saturday at the North Tonawanda City Market, Lily Acre Farm‘s fresh rhubarb set off a scramble for the best stalks. A few rows away, Buckingham Bakery, the Amish folks, offered rhubarb ice cream among a whole passel of baked goods. A few blocks from the market, on Zimmerman Street, Anastasia’s Bakery offered strawberry-rhubarb scones.

It’s too soon in the season to know for sure, but if we’re lucky, perhaps Jesse Ross will bring back his chicken liver mousse with rhubarb gelee at Dapper Goose.
